What is a Content Management System?
A Content Management System (CMS) is a system attached to a website that has a number of benefits. It allows authorised users to log in and add or edit the website’s content, meaning that you will not need to pay a web designer to maintain the site for you. It also makes your website infinitely expandable; new pages and extended functionality such as blogs, contact forms and Google maps can be added very easily. These intuitive systems require very little technical knowledge to maintain and pages can be edited as if they are Microsoft Word documents.
What is involved in the website creation process?
The typical creation process for a content managed website is as follows:
- A quote is agreed with the client based on the scope and functionality of the website
- A design process begins with a handful of very rough designs based on the client’s brief
- The rough designs are developed into a final design based on feedback
- The website is built into a template and attached to the content management system
- I insert all of the initial content specified by the client at the quotation stage
- Once the website goes live, on-site training is supplied to the client allowing them to edit their website themselves*. A help sheet document is provided for assistance
- Six months of technical support is provided in case of any problems.
*On site training may not be possible for distant clients, but phone/video training can be arranged.
Additional features available include:
- Addition of Google Analytics – allowing you to monitor important statistics about your website visitors
- Creation of a sitemap and submission to Google, Yahoo and Bing – Allowing you to monitor your search engine inclusion and find which keywords are being picked up in your content
- Animated or video elements
How much do websites cost?
The price of a website depends on its size, scale and complexity; so the real solution to this is to request a free quote. The simplest of web pages could cost as little as £100.
Do you provide hosting?
I encourage clients to purchase their own domain name and hosting package so that they have full control over and ownership over their website. For those who are unsure about how these things work I can offer assistance free of charge. If clients would rather steer clear of this, I can arrange for hosting to be set up on their behalf, but a small charge for my time would be incurred.
Do I have to pay money up front?
In most cases, no. I usually invoice for everything upon satisfactory completion of the project. However, if the client cancels for any reason they are liable for any work that has already been carried out. Any money owed will be pursued with legal backing if neccesary.
What is your work philosophy?
To provide the best possible service for the customer. As a relatively new businessman working from home, I have limited capacities for paid advertising, and so my marketing relies on word of mouth and customer testimonials. As such, it is my utmost priority to provide a fast, reliable and communicative service for my customers to ensure they receive the best possible product.
How did you get started?
In May 2009 the multimedia company at which I had worked for three years closed down. I left with a wealth of different skills and some great connections, so rather than seeking employment I decided to try working for myself – and I have never looked back!
Are you seeking employment?
No thanks, I am very happy working on a self employed basis.
Do you accept outsourced work from other companies/agents?
I undertake subcontracted work from other companies or agents as long as they share some knowledge of the job in hand and understand what is physically possible. I would ideally like to meet anyone who wants to subcontract work to me prior to any work taking place.
Do you accept rush jobs?
As a freelancer I am generally quite flexible and would normally be able to take on jobs that require a very quick turnaround. If you require something of this nature please contact me to find out my current workload.
Do you accept “spec work”?
Spec work (short for speculative) is any job for which the client expects to see examples or a finished product before agreeing to pay a fee.
No thanks, I am not currently in a position to be able to take on work that I might not be paid for.
Do you do any work for charities?
I like to give something back to communities and do take on occasional work for charities. Please feel free to get in touch if you are from a charity and have any design requirements.
Are you looking for business partners?
I’m not currently looking to partner up with anyone to form a limited company or partnership, but I am always happy to make new connections and meet other freelancers with complimenting skillsets to my own.
Can I publish your blog post on my website?
Yes, I have no problem with that. It would be nice if you would provide a link back here.
